I roasted tomatoes and a medley of hot peppers over a wood fire and then threw them all into a pot with water and a soup bone and simmered it all day.

War scared, this warrior braved attacks of horned worms, leaf fungus, and heavy rains. Surprisingly, we did alright despite my being out of town until the end of June. Beth was busy taking care of the children and had little to tend the garden. Oh, but didn’t it taste good!

Today on Dutton Hill:

I’ve started a new project among the many I have going. This one, of the creative flavor- inspired by the table I built while in NYC the last 6 months for work.

I’m going to attempt to make a version of said table completely of stone. But, assembled in the way you would use wood. Only, different. Because, its not wood- its stone.

Form follows function.. Sort of like the bronze ritual vessels from Shang Dynasty China- how they were designed like the former clay versions.

First, to split a boulder I’ve been saving for the day I had a worthy idea. I hope this is that.

Encouraged by a first success.

Our eggs come from happy, cage-free birds who forage on grass, bugs, and table scraps as well as supplemental grain and hay. We have a handful of Speckled Sussex and Rhode Island Red girls who in their second year lay every couple of days. While our giant breed, Buff Orpington one-year-olds are laying nearly every day. They benefit from the natural light of my passive solar coop which I built with hand tools, reclaimed timber, and windows from an historic Casco Bay Bank building in Portland.
